A memorial record of the Kagoshima rebels — the Satsuma samurai who rose against the Meiji government in 1877 — produced as a commemorative document of the conflict and its participants. The "tsuito ki" (memorial record) designation gives the print an explicitly commemorative function: honoring the memory of those who died in the rebellion regardless of the political judgment on their cause. In the years following the suppression of the Satsuma Rebellion, commemoration of its participants became increasingly permissible as political passions cooled.
