Koitsu's atmospheric night and temple scenes are his most sought-after subjects. Doi Hangaten first editions (1930s) are the most desirable; Watanabe editions are more common.
Godaido Hall at Matsushima stands on a tiny rocky islet connected to the shore by a short wooden bridge, its position above the pine-clad islands of the bay creating one of Japan's most iconic coastal views. The hall, rebuilt in 1604 by Date Masamune, houses a wooden statue of a seven-faced Kannon visible to the public only every 33 years. Koitsu renders the scene with the misty, dream-like quality that Matsushima's pine islands inspire, the [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) sky merging water and air at the horizon.
