Koitsu's atmospheric night and temple scenes are his most sought-after subjects. Doi Hangaten first editions (1930s) are the most desirable; Watanabe editions are more common.
Kofukuji in Nara was the great temple of the powerful Fujiwara clan, its five-storied pagoda and octagonal halls rising above Sarusawa Pond in a setting that defined the image of ancient Nara. Koitsu renders the temple complex with soft atmospheric depth, the pagoda catching late light above the shadowed grounds. Kofukuji suffered the same cycles of destruction and reconstruction as most of Nara's ancient temples, and Koitsu's treatment honors both the grandeur of what survived and the awareness that it had survived by chance.
