Description
A grey torii gate stands offshore in shallow water beneath a rain-streaked dusk sky, its silhouette softened by falling rain. In the foreground, two dark stone lanterns with glowing lit windows flank a strip of wet shore where a single deer stands; a pine tree's dark, sweeping branches drape in from the upper left. The palette is dominated by deep blues and greys, with the lanterns' warm lantern-light as the only touch of contrast. Tsuchiya Koitsu, "Rainy Miyajima," 1941, woodblock print.
