Koitsu's atmospheric night and temple scenes are his most sought-after subjects. Doi Hangaten first editions (1930s) are the most desirable; Watanabe editions are more common.
The great torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine at Miyajima, normally celebrated for its summer and autumn beauty, appears here transformed by snow — the vermilion lacquer stark against white fields and grey winter water, the pine-clad hills behind the island dusted with snow. Koitsu uses the winter palette to strip away the shrine's usual touristic associations and reveal an older, more austere sacred beauty. The snow-covered torii floating in still winter water is one of the most quietly powerful images in his catalog.
