Koitsu's atmospheric night and temple scenes are his most sought-after subjects. Doi Hangaten first editions (1930s) are the most desirable; Watanabe editions are more common.
Ukimido — the floating hall at Katata on Lake Biwa — reappears here in another snow treatment, this time with the hall identified as Ukimido Shrine at Katada, giving the religious character of the small building greater emphasis. The composition may differ from Koitsu's other Ukimido versions in the placement of the hall relative to the shore and the specific quality of the snow accumulation on the roof and surrounding ice. The multiple treatments of the subject testify to its enduring importance as a test case for the atmospheric snow-on-water composition.
