Chikamatsu Kanroku Minamoto Yukishige was one of the forty-seven ronin, the loyal retainers who avenged their master Lord Asano in 1703. This 1868 print, numbered 11 in its series, depicts him in the manner of the [musha-e](/glossary/musha-e) warrior portrait, rendered with the fierce concentration Yoshitoshi brought to all his commemorations of samurai loyalty. The forty-seven ronin remained one of the most popular subjects in Meiji-era popular culture, endlessly retold in print, kabuki, and fiction as a model of bushido.
