This 1864 panoramic print shows the distant view across Kanagawa Bay to the burgeoning port settlement of Yokohama, seen from the veranda of the Daikokurō restaurant. Yokohama had been opened to foreign trade only six years earlier, and the resulting transformation of the small fishing village into a major international port was one of the visual spectacles of the early Meiji era. Yoshitoshi captures the scene with topographic precision, Western ships visible in the harbor, representing the new Japan emerging across the water.
