Genzanmi Yorimasa and I no Hayata appear in this October 1878 print in the celebrated scene of Yorimasa's slaying of the nue—a chimeric monster that had been terrorizing the Imperial Palace with its eerie cries. Minamoto no Yorimasa, a warrior-poet of the late Heian period, shot the creature from the sky while his retainer I no Hayata stabbed it as it fell. Yoshitoshi depicts the moment with atmospheric night-sky composition, the monster's fall illuminated against the darkness.
