Inuzuka Shino and Inukai Genpachi, two of the eight "dog warriors" from Takizawa Bakin's epic novel "Nansō Satomi Hakkenden," meet in this April 1873 print—an encounter that was one of the narrative's pivotal moments of recognition. The eight warriors, each bearing a virtue inscribed on a crystal bead, are destined to find each other across a lifetime of wandering. Yoshitoshi depicts the two heroes in a moment charged with the recognition of brotherhood, their meeting combining warrior drama with the novel's Buddhist moral framework.
