Matsubara Tachū is a preparatory ink-and-color drawing from the second half of the 1860s, depicting a warrior figure at the concept stage before woodblock transfer. The sketch reveals Yoshitoshi's compositional approach in its unfinished state—pose, costume detail, and facial expression all worked out in ink before the final design was committed to wood. Such preparatory drawings are relatively rare survivals, offering insight into the creative process behind what appeared to audiences as polished final prints.
