Negoro no Komitsucha appears in this 1868 [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) print as a warrior figure from popular fiction or the chronicles of the warrior-monks (sōhei) of the Negoro temple complex in Kii Province. The Negoro monks were famous for their skill with firearms and their fierce military autonomy, crushed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1585. Komitsucha—the name suggesting a small tea vessel—may be a fictional character within this historical setting, rendered by Yoshitoshi in the vigorous [musha-e](/glossary/musha-e) style of his late 1860s warrior prints.
