"Picture of the Great Battle of Kawanakajima" (1866) depicts the legendary series of confrontations between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin on the Kawanakajima plain in Shinano Province, which became one of the most celebrated military encounters of the Sengoku period. The fourth battle (1561) produced the famous episode in which Kenshin rode alone into Shingen's command tent and struck at him with his sword—a story that epitomized the personal martial culture of the era. Yoshitoshi's treatment renders the clash with the broad energy of his Sengoku war compositions.
