"Second Shogun, Lord Daitoku-inden Hidetada" (1875) is a historical portrait of Tokugawa Hidetada, the second Tokugawa shogun (r. 1605–1623), who consolidated the administrative structure his father Ieyasu had established. Hidetada is depicted in formal court attire consistent with the rigid hierarchies of the Tokugawa period, rendered with the factual specificity of historical portrait prints that proliferated during the Meiji era as the abolished shogunate became a subject of nostalgic historical study.
