Shima Sakon Tomoyuki was a brilliant military strategist who served as the chief retainer of Ishida Mitsunari, the administrator who opposed Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Renowned as one of the finest tactical minds of his era, Sakon was offered enormous sums by multiple warlords before choosing to serve Mitsunari for a fraction of what others offered. This 1868 [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) portrait renders him as a figure of decisive martial intelligence, consistent with his historical reputation as a strategist who grasped the entire field at a glance.
