Shumitsu Kanja Yoshitaka was a historical warrior figure drawn from the chronicles of medieval Japan, depicted here in Yoshitoshi's vigorous warrior-print style of the late 1860s. Published in 1867, this print belongs to a period when Yoshitoshi produced dozens of fierce [musha-e](/glossary/musha-e), or warrior pictures, saturated with blood and dynamic movement that critics later called "bloody prints" (muzan-e). The composition typifies his early fascination with extreme physical drama rendered with technical precision.
