"The Battle at Jinju during Masakiyo's Conquest of Korea" (1863) is an ōban [triptych](/glossary/triptych) depicting Katō Kiyomasa's forces storming the fortress city of Jinju—one of the pivotal sieges of Hideyoshi's first Korean campaign. The attack on Jinju in 1592 became legendary in Japanese popular history, with Kiyomasa's fierce leadership celebrated in countless prints and stories. Yoshitoshi renders the assault with the chaotic energy of large-scale battle compositions, the three-sheet format allowing him to spread the fighting across a panoramic field of action.
