"Top: Cheerful Foxes at the Mimeguri Shrine on the Banks of the Sumida River; Bottom: A Famous Jockey at Shōkonsha" (January 1881) is a double-panel newspaper illustration combining two topical subjects: the annual phenomenon of kitsune-bi (fox fire) seen at the Mimeguri Shrine in winter, and a famous horse race at the Shōkonsha shrine grounds. The combination reflects the newspaper illustration format that shaped much of Yoshitoshi's output during the 1870s and early 1880s, where diverse news items appeared on the same sheet.
