Description
Fighting Bulls in Iyo—the togyu tradition of his home Ehime Prefecture under the old name Iyo—connects Azechi's mature artistic vision back to the specific regional culture of his birthplace. The bull fights of Uwajima were (and remain) an annual event that Azechi would have witnessed as a child, the massive animals straining against each other in the arena a spectacle of concentrated bovine force that his bold visual style was well suited to capture.
