Description

Graveyard of Sengakuji—a direct title for what appears in the Azechi list as distinct from the earlier Recollections of Tokyo version—may represent a different compositional treatment of the famous cemetery where the forty-seven ronin are buried, perhaps from a later period of his career than the 1945 version. The subject of the famous grave site, with its rows of incense burners and its atmosphere of sustained popular veneration, remained a draw for artists across decades.
