Description
Sengakuji—the temple in Minato Ward, Tokyo, where the forty-seven ronin are buried and where incense still burns at their graves—appears in Azechi's output as a subject distinct from the Recollections of Tokyo cemetery prints. This version may show the temple's architectural exterior rather than the grave precinct, or may document a different visit to the site at a different period of his career. The temple's historical significance gives it a weight in Japanese cultural memory that his bold simplified rendering would honor rather than diminish.
