Ichinotani in Hyogo Prefecture is the site of a decisive 1184 battle in the Genpei War — the narrow coastal defile where Minamoto warriors ambushed the Taira clan from the cliffs above. Hiratsuka renders the landscape of this famous battle site with his characteristic attention to topography, the cliffs and sea that made the location both strategically vital and historically resonant.
