From Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856–58), a 118-print series of vertical oban landscapes and genre scenes that defined the visual image of Edo for generations. A complete set sold for $405,400 at Sotheby's Online Jul 2024.
Suzaki Benten refers to the Benzaiten shrine on the tidal flats at the southern end of Fukagawa, where a small island in the bay was accessible at low tide. The goddess Benzaiten — patroness of music, eloquence, and good fortune — was enshrined here, and pilgrims made their way across the exposed mudflats to worship. The tidal setting gave this numbered Edo view its distinctive coastal character.
