From Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856–58), a 118-print series of vertical oban landscapes and genre scenes that defined the visual image of Edo for generations. A complete set sold for $405,400 at Sotheby's Online Jul 2024.
Shinobazunoike, the large pond at the foot of Ueno hill, was divided by a causeway to the Benten shrine on a small island at its center. The pond's lotus beds turned brilliant green and pink in summer, and the Benten shrine — patroness of music and good fortune — drew steady visitors across the seasons. This numbered Edo view captures the pond, shrine, and surrounding landscape as a celebrated spot within the Ueno hill complex.
