Hiroshige's moonlit and night scenes are celebrated for their emotional depth and mastery of atmospheric printing. Bokashi gradation in night blues and silvery grays is the hallmark of fine impressions.
Ishiyama-dera, the ancient temple on a rocky promontory at the southern end of Lake Biwa, was famous as the place where Murasaki Shikibu composed the opening chapter of "The Tale of Genji." This oban print from the "Eight Views of Omi" series captures the autumn moon rising over the lake, its light filtering through the temple's pine trees and illuminating the calm water below. The autumnal moon at Ishiyama was one of the most celebrated of the eight views.
