This 1857 landscape print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the autumn moon rising over Ishiyama Temple on Lake Biwa in Omi Province, one of the canonical Eight Views of Omi (Omi hakkei). The composition places the temple's pavilions on a rocky promontory at the right, with pine boughs reaching across the foreground and the dark expanse of the lake stretching to a distant shore. A large luminous moon, partly veiled by drifting cloud, dominates the upper register, and small skiffs ride the moonlit water below. Ishiyama-dera, perched above the Seta River where it leaves Lake Biwa, was traditionally associated with the writing of the Tale of Genji, whose author Murasaki Shikibu was said to have begun her novel during an autumn moonlit stay at the temple; the site thus combined Buddhist devotion, literary memory, and the most refined poetic appreciation of the moon. The Eight Views of Omi were modeled on the Chinese Eight Views of Xiaoxiang and had been a touchstone subject of Japanese painting and Edo [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) for centuries. Hiroshige's vertical o-ban design uses [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation in the sky and water to create a soft luminous atmosphere, while careful color registration in the temple roof and foliage anchors the dreamlike scene. This impression is preserved in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, where it exemplifies Hiroshige's late mastery of the moonlit landscape print and his engagement with the long iconography of Lake Biwa.
