Description
Cherry Blossom Day on the Nakanocho of the Yoshiwara (Yoshiwara Nakanocho Sakura no monbi) belongs to Utagawa Hiroshige's series Famous Places in Edo (Edo meisho), produced around 1835 and held by the Art Institute of Chicago. The Yoshiwara was Edo's officially licensed pleasure quarter, and its central avenue, the Nakanocho, was renowned for the temporary cherry trees that the quarter installed and removed each spring so that the street would be lined with blossoms during their brief season. The 'monbi' in the title refers to the formal display days on which courtesans paraded in their finest robes and clients gathered to view both the cherry trees and the women. Hiroshige's Edo ukiyo-e landscape print arranges the scene as a long perspective down the Nakanocho, with two-storied tea houses receding on either side, banks of cherry blossoms forming a pink canopy above the street, and crowds of visitors animating the central avenue. Lanterns and signboards mark the entrances of leading establishments, while small figures in patterned kimonos suggest the social variety of the crowd. The composition demonstrates Hiroshige's interest in urban architectural spaces alongside his more familiar landscape print idiom, treating the Yoshiwara as a famous place on equal footing with bridges, shrines, and scenic vistas. The design reflects the way Edo culture used the seasonal calendar to choreograph public display, and it gives modern viewers an image of how the cherry-blossom holiday transformed the structure and rhythm of the licensed quarter.
