Description
Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom at Goten-yama (Goten-yama hanazakari) from Famous Places in Edo (Edo meisho) records one of the great spring destinations of the shogun's capital. Goten-yama, a hill in the Shinagawa district along Edo Bay, was famous for its sweeping views of the bay and for its cherry trees, which made it a magnet for hanami parties from across the city. Utagawa Hiroshige's design gathers the customary elements of his blossom-viewing prints: visitors in their spring kimono sit beneath canopies of pink blossom, food bundles spread on mats, sake passed around, and small children running between the trees. Beyond the hill, the bay opens out toward the horizon with fishing boats and the silhouette of headlands. The composition exemplifies the Edo ukiyo-e landscape print at its most sociable, where seasonal humanity becomes inseparable from the topography of a famous place. The Harvard Art Museums impression preserves the delicate pink bokashi of the blossoms, the warm green ground tones of the hill, and the careful blue gradation of the distant bay. Within the Edo meisho series, the Goten-yama design remains one of the most cheerful and direct celebrations of communal pleasure that Hiroshige ever drew, and a key document of how the Edo public made the seasonal calendar visible across the urban landscape.
