Description

Cherry Blossoms in the Yoshiwara (Yoshiwara sakura no zu) from Famous Places in Edo (Koto meisho) depicts the springtime ritual of the licensed quarters that gave Edo's pleasure district a distinctive seasonal identity. Each spring, the Yoshiwara was decorated with rows of full-bloom cherry trees, planted along its central street, the Nakanocho, so that the otherwise tightly enclosed quarter became briefly an outdoor garden. Utagawa Hiroshige's design surveys the scene from a generous vantage: rows of cherry trees in full bloom run down the central avenue, lanterns line the eaves of the teahouses, and crowds of visitors fill the street in the small evening light. The print places the quarter within the broader visual culture of Edo blossom-viewing, where the courtesans' world and the city's general appetite for hanami merged. As an Edo ukiyo-e landscape print, the design occupies a particular niche: rather than a natural landscape, it portrays a deliberately landscaped urban interior, but Hiroshige's pictorial logic is identical. The Harvard Art Museums impression preserves the careful blocking of the pink blossoms and the warm color of the lantern light. Within the Koto meisho series, the Yoshiwara design remains one of the most informative documents of how Edo's pleasure district presented itself to the broader public during cherry-blossom season.
