Description
Clear Morning after Snow at Nihonbashi Bridge (Nihonbashi yukibare no asa), from the series Famous Places in Edo (Edo meisho), held by the Harvard Art Museums, is an Edo ukiyo-e landscape print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the symbolic centre of the city after a heavy snowfall has given way to clear skies. Nihonbashi, the great wooden bridge from which the Tokaido and all distances in Edo were measured, was the natural focal point of any meisho-e cycle dedicated to the capital. In this Utagawa Hiroshige landscape print the artist combines a carefully observed view of the bridge with the seasonal motif of fresh snow on its surfaces and on the surrounding roofs and embankments. The Edo ukiyo-e palette favours pale blues, greys and the reserved whites of the unprinted paper, with bright accents of vermillion and indigo in the figures crossing the bridge. Snowfall is rendered through controlled gauffrage and the deliberate sparing of pigment, a technique at which Hiroshige excelled. The Harvard Art Museums impression preserves the design's clarity and the careful registration that gives the bridge its imposing geometry. As a landscape print, the work shows how Hiroshige used the everyday infrastructure of Edo, its bridges, its docks, its commercial frontages, as material for a sustained meditation on urban beauty under changing weather, anchored by his characteristic feeling for atmosphere and seasonal nuance.
