Dance of the Star of Longevity at Kaimongatake, Makurazaki, Satsuma Province (Sasshu Makurazaki Kaimongatake Jusei odori), from One Hundred Famous Views in the Various Provinces (Shokoku meisho hyakkei), brings Utagawa Hiroshige's late vertical landscape vision to the southernmost reaches of Kyushu. Kaimongatake, the conical volcano sometimes called the Satsuma Fuji, rises near Makurazaki on the southwestern coast, and was associated locally with the jusei or longevity-star dance, a folk performance that combined cosmological symbolism with seasonal celebration. Hiroshige's design layers the elements characteristic of the Shokoku meisho hyakkei: the mountain rises in soft bokashi from deep base color to white summit, a stylized cloud band crosses the upper register, foreground figures perform the dance with banners and instruments, and the coastal landscape opens out behind. As an Edo ukiyo-e landscape print produced for an Edo audience, the design participates in the late-Tokugawa fascination with bringing distant provincial customs into the visual vocabulary of the eastern capital. The Harvard Art Museums impression preserves the saturated blues and oranges that distinguish strong early states of the series. Within Hiroshige's posthumously completed survey of provincial Japan, the Kaimongatake sheet stands out for the directness with which it weds geographical fact and ceremonial life.
