Description
This 1842 sheet is the left panel of an incomplete triptych by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting Enjoying the Cool of the Evening and Fireworks at Ryōgoku Bridge, one of the most iconic summer subjects in Edo ukiyo-e. Ryōgoku Bridge spanned the Sumida River near the entertainment quarters of Honjo and Asakusabashi, and on summer evenings the embankments, boats, and the bridge itself filled with crowds who came to escape the heat, eat from floating restaurants, and watch the fireworks (hanabi) launched over the river. In Hiroshige's design the left sheet would have shown a portion of the bridge and the surrounding river traffic, with figures in summer kimono gathered along the railing and pleasure boats massed beneath; the now-missing sheets would have completed the panoramic sweep and the bursting fireworks against the night sky. Even in fragmentary form the print conveys the festive density of riverside Edo and Hiroshige's skill at orchestrating dozens of small figures within an architectural framework. The landscape print conventions he had developed in his Tōkaidō and Edo series — clear spatial recession, atmospheric coloration, careful attention to seasonal cues — are here adapted to nocturnal urban spectacle. The Harvard Art Museums impression of this 1842 design preserves an important record of Hiroshige's engagement with Ryōgoku as a recurring stage for his Edo cityscapes.
