Description

This print depicts Kanazawa in Musashi Province (present-day Kanazawa-ku, Yokohama), a coastal area distinct from the better-known Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture, renowned in the Edo period for its eight scenic views modeled on the Chinese convention of eight famous prospects. Evening scenes allowed Hiroshige to deploy his most ambitious bokashi work: the sky printed in deep indigo or purple gradations shading toward the water's edge, with a moon—possibly partially obscured by cloud—providing the principal light source. Silhouetted pine islands would emerge from the darkening bay, their reflections broken by gentle wave motion printed in linear carving. The composition likely surveys the bay from an elevated vantage point, capturing the specific quality of maritime dusk in a location known for its quiet, island-dotted coastline. Night and evening scenes required exceptional skill from both the carver and printer to maintain tonal range across the darkened field, and Hiroshige's Kanazawa prints are among his most technically demanding atmospheric works.
