Description
Full Moon with a Cuckoo Flying above the Masts of Moored Boats, an 1855 print by Utagawa Hiroshige in the Victoria and Albert Museum, brings together several charged elements of classical Japanese poetic imagination into a single quietly powerful composition. The cuckoo, hototogisu, was one of the most evocative birds of summer in waka and haiku, its call associated with longing, memory, and the brief intensity of warm nights. Paired with a full moon, the bird becomes an emblem of seasonal beauty and emotional resonance that Edo readers would have recognised at once. Hiroshige then sets these motifs above the tall masts of moored boats, anchoring the scene in the riverine reality of late Edo, where harbours and waterways defined the rhythms of city life. The image can be read as both a bird-and-flower print and an Edo ukiyo-e landscape print in miniature, sharing characteristics of both genres. The composition typically uses an elongated vertical or tanzaku format suited to such poetic subjects, with the moon high and the cuckoo silhouetted against its disc, the masts piercing the lower air, and the water suggested below. Restrained palettes of indigo, white, and grey reinforce the contemplative night atmosphere. Within Hiroshige's late career, prints of this kind extend his mastery of mood and seasonal symbolism. The V&A's holding offers an excellent example of how his work continued to bridge classical poetry, natural observation, and the everyday world of the Sumida and Edo Bay.
