Description

Goggle-eyed Sea Bream and Bamboo Grass belongs to Utagawa Hiroshige's untitled set commonly referred to as the Large Fish series, a sequence of designs related in spirit to Uo-zukushi but distinguished by their especially monumental treatment of single fish. The me-kasago, a kind of large-eyed sea bream, fills the sheet as a powerful, fleshy form, its scales, fins, and prominent eye rendered with careful gradations of color and finely incised detail. A sprig of bamboo grass provides a botanical companion that locates the fish in a seasonal register and acknowledges the convention of pairing aquatic and plant motifs inherited from earlier still-life traditions. The Edo ukiyo-e master applied to the fish the same observational discipline that distinguished his landscape print designs, using the woodblock medium to convey weight, surface, and the particular gleam of fish skin. Inscribed kyōka verses linked the visual motif to the literary cultures of Edo, where prized fish figured in seasonal poetry and gift-giving. The Large Fish series sat alongside Uo-zukushi as part of a wider ukiyo-e engagement with the marketplace, the table, and the natural world. The Harvard Art Museums impression preserves a high-quality example of this distinctive group and helps document Hiroshige's command of the still-life format alongside his landscape work.
