Description

Hodogaya: Katabira River and Katabira Bridge, the fifth station from Utagawa Hiroshige's Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (Tokaido gojusan tsugi), is one of the designs from the set commonly called the Reisho Tokaido after the reisho clerical script used in its title cartouches. Issued around 1842 and held in the Art Institute of Chicago, it revisits material the artist had treated earlier in his famous 1833 series, this time recasting Hodogaya through the bridge that travelers crossed as they left the post town. The Tokaido highway connecting Edo and Kyoto was the most heavily used road in Edo-period Japan, and Hiroshige built much of his career around mapping its post stations in serial form. In this Edo ukiyo-e landscape print, the Katabira River winds beneath a long wooden bridge while porters, palanquin bearers, and traveling commoners cross above its waters. The bridge serves as a horizontal armature anchoring the composition, with the riverbank vegetation receding diagonally into the distance and trees framing the right side of the sheet. Hiroshige relies on the contrast between the muted blues and greens of water and foliage and the warmer earth tones of the road, while small figures in patterned robes establish a sense of constant movement along the route. As a later reworking, the Reisho Tokaido design demonstrates how the artist continued to refine his understanding of a single station, here emphasizing infrastructure, daylight, and steady traffic rather than weather drama, giving Edo viewers a steady cumulative portrait of the highway.
