Description
Hojo Tokimune and Soga no Juro Sukenari Celebrate Goro's Coming of Age belongs to Utagawa Hiroshige's series Illustrated Tale of the Soga Brothers (Soga monogatari zue), published around 1838 and preserved in the Art Institute of Chicago. The Soga monogatari recounts the long revenge of the brothers Juro Sukenari and Goro Tokimune against Kudo Suketsune for the murder of their father, a story that became one of the most enduring narratives of medieval Japanese literature and was endlessly retold on the kabuki stage during the Edo period. Hiroshige's series unfolds the tale across episodes, and in this sheet he depicts the ceremonial moment in which the younger brother formally enters adulthood in the presence of the regent Hojo Tokimune and his elder brother Juro Sukenari. While Hiroshige is most associated with the landscape print, his work within Edo ukiyo-e also included narrative figure subjects, and the Soga series shows him organizing interior scenes with the same sense of measured spatial arrangement that he brought to outdoor views. The figures are placed at clear intervals across the picture plane, their kimono patterns carefully printed in contrasting blocks of color, while architectural elements frame the action and establish hierarchy. Designs from this series gave Edo audiences a visual accompaniment to a story they encountered in theater, illustrated books, and seasonal festivals, and they helped sustain the popularity of the brothers as moral exemplars of filial piety and resolve well into the nineteenth century.
