Mount Yoshino, Yamato Province (Yamato Yoshinoyama) is one of the canonical cherry-blossom sheets in Hiroshige II's One Hundred Famous Views in the Various Provinces (Shokoku meisho hyakkei) of 1859. Yoshino in Yamato Province (modern Nara Prefecture) had been since the Nara period one of the most celebrated cherry-blossom ([sakura](/glossary/sakura)) sites of Japan: the sequence of Shimo Senbon, Naka Senbon, Kami Senbon, and Oku Senbon ('Lower / Middle / Upper / Inner Thousand Trees') groves blossomed in succession up the mountain in early April, and the site is woven into classical waka literature and Buddhist pilgrimage history. Hiroshige II's composition uses the tall vertical ōban format to render the massed pink and white blossoms across the slope of the mountain, with small temple buildings tucked into the trees and clouds wreathing the upper register. The print exemplifies the way Shokoku meisho hyakkei systematically gathered the famous meisho of classical poetry and recast them in the visual language of late Edo print culture. The Art Institute of Chicago impression (1939.2287) is part of the Bruce Goff Archive given by Shin'enkan, Inc.
