Description
Illustrated Satirical Poems About Famous Scenic Views in Edo (Kyoka Edo meisho zue), Vol. 13, dated 1856, is a single volume from one of the great kyoka picture books of late Edo period publishing, designed by Utagawa Hiroshige. Kyoka, the witty 'mad' thirty-one-syllable poems beloved by Edo townsmen, were customarily printed alongside landscape illustrations of the city's famous places, and Hiroshige supplied designs across multiple volumes of this enduring project. The thirteenth volume gathers further meisho views of Edo, each paired with verses by amateur and professional kyoka poets, allowing the book to function simultaneously as guide, gift item, and literary anthology. Hiroshige's approach in the book medium differs from his sheet-print landscape work: compositions are scaled to the doubled-page opening, color is restrained to a sober palette that prints cleanly across paper folds, and figures are sketched with the economy of a designer trusted to carry both pictorial and decorative responsibilities. The result is an Edo ukiyo-e landscape print idiom adapted to bookwork, where each opening rewards slow reading as much as looking. The Harvard Art Museums copy preserves the cover, prefaces, and full sequence of designs, allowing scholars to study how Hiroshige paced the volume rhythmically across familiar Edo districts. Together with its companion volumes, the book remains one of the most informative documents of mid-nineteenth-century Edo visual culture, and a key resource for understanding Hiroshige's relationships with the city's literary circles.
