Description
This landscape print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the coastline at Katase as viewed from the heights of Mount Shichimen, a vantage point on the pilgrimage route to the island shrine of Enoshima. It belongs to the series The Enoshima Road on the Tokaido (Tokaido no uchi Enoshima michi), one of several specialized travel sets in which Hiroshige extended his celebrated Tokaido formula to branch routes radiating out from the main highway. Pilgrimage to Enoshima, dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten, was a popular outing for Edo townspeople in the second quarter of the nineteenth century, combining religious observance with coastal sightseeing. Hiroshige composes the view with a steep, plunging foreground that exaggerates the elevation of Shichimen, opening up the curve of the beach and the long line of breakers below. Pine-clad slopes frame the view at left, and the small figures of pilgrims read as scale markers more than narrative subjects. The print belongs squarely within the Edo ukiyo-e meisho-e tradition, where named viewpoints, recognizable topography, and seasonal mood combine to convey the experience of travel. The Harvard Art Museums impression preserves the cool palette of blue, sand, and pine-green that Hiroshige favored for coastal subjects.
