Hiroshige produced an estimated 8,000 designs over his 40-year career, making him one of the most prolific masters of ukiyo-e. His market has strengthened significantly in recent years, with the 2025 Sotheby's Paris record of $2.4M and growing international collector interest.
The moat at Benkei-bori alongside Kojimachi, viewed from the Sakurada Gate of the shogunal castle, offered one of the more composed urban vistas in Edo — broad water reflecting the castle walls, willows trailing along the embankment. This view, likely from a series of Edo's notable spots, captures the formal geometry of the castle's outer defenses alongside the natural softness of the waterway plantings.
