Description
Utagawa Hiroshige's Mount Kaso in Kazusa Province (Kazusa Kasozan) belongs to the witty series Wrestling Matches between Mountains and Seas (Sankai mitate zumo), in which celebrated mountains and seacoasts from across Japan are paired as if they were sumo wrestlers ranked for a tournament. The mitate (parody) framing was a popular Edo ukiyo-e device, and Hiroshige used it to repurpose the landscape print genre as a kind of geographic ranking sheet, pairing inland mountains with coastal sites and inviting the viewer to imagine the bouts. For Kazusa Province, on the Boso Peninsula across the bay from Edo, he selects Mount Kaso, depicted with characteristic compositional discipline: a strong silhouette of the peak, with foreground details establishing local industry or travel, and the ranking text inscribed above. The cool palette and tight bokashi gradations tie this sheet visually to Hiroshige's more straightforwardly topographical landscape prints, while the playful conceit places it firmly within the mitate tradition. The Harvard Art Museums impression preserves the saturated indigo and the careful printing of the ranking inscription that the format required.
