Description
Rooster, Umbrella, and Morning Glories is a kacho-e by Utagawa Hiroshige, designed around 1830 and held in the Art Institute of Chicago. The composition pairs a domestic rooster with the trailing vines and trumpet blossoms of asagao, the morning glory, and introduces an unexpected accent in the form of a Japanese oiled paper umbrella propped behind the bird. The juxtaposition turns what could be a straightforward bird-and-flower study into a small genre tableau, hinting at the human household just out of frame. Hiroshige's rooster is drawn with affectionate observation: the high tail, the puffed breast, the wattles and comb described with crisp keyblock lines, while the colour blocks build up the saturated red and dark green that characterise the breed. The morning glory vines climb across the surface in graceful arcs, their dawn blue blossoms set off by the umbrella's warm tone. Although Hiroshige's enduring fame rests on the Edo ukiyo-e landscape print, his kacho-e were a substantial part of his output and a significant source of income, distributed in formats from large oban down to narrow tanzaku for hanging in domestic interiors. The Art Institute of Chicago's collection contains a strong group of these nature designs, allowing visitors to see how Hiroshige's celebrated atmospheric sensitivity was equally at home in a closely framed garden corner. Rooster, Umbrella, and Morning Glories also demonstrates the genre's openness to humour and gentle narrative, qualities that helped Hiroshige's prints reach a broad popular audience and that contributed to the European fascination with Japanese woodblock prints later in the nineteenth century.
