Description
Scenic View of the Sea at Shibaura from the Foot of Mount Yatsu at Takanawa is a landscape print by Utagawa Hiroshige dating to about 1850 and held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. The composition looks out from the high ground of Takanawa, in the southern outskirts of Edo, over the wide expanse of Edo Bay at Shibaura. Hiroshige favors a sweeping horizontal format that lets the viewer feel both the elevation of the foreground and the vastness of the sea, with sails of fishing and cargo boats scattered across the water and the low coast curving toward the horizon. The vantage point was a celebrated meisho (famous place), associated in Edo ukiyo-e tradition with seasonal moon viewing and with the everyday spectacle of maritime traffic feeding the Tokugawa capital. Hiroshige's economy of means is striking: a few figures animate the foreground, while bands of pigment and subtle bokashi gradients carry the rest of the composition. The print thereby exemplifies the mature landscape print sensibility he refined in the 1840s and 1850s, drawing on the conventions of Chinese landscape painting, his own earlier Tokaido designs, and the literary tradition of place-based poetry. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds extensive Hiroshige holdings, and this Shibaura view sits comfortably alongside his better-known Edo series in showing how he treated the bay as a continually changing field of light, weather, and human activity. As a record of pre-Meiji coastal Edo it is also a valuable historical document, capturing a shoreline now utterly transformed by reclamation and industrial development, and it remains a fine example of late Edo period landscape ukiyo-e from one of the genre's defining designers.
