Description

Seki was the forty-seventh post station on the Tokaido, a busy junction in Ise Province where the highway met routes leading south to the Ise Shrines and north toward the Suzuka mountains. Its inns and shops served a steady stream of pilgrims as well as ordinary Tokaido travelers, and the town remains today one of the best-preserved post stations along the old route. In this 1842 landscape print from Utagawa Hiroshige's Reisho Tokaido, the artist depicts Seki with the calm, descriptive style of the late series, attending to its rows of low wooden buildings, projecting eaves, and the modest figures of porters and shopkeepers along the main street. The set takes its nickname from the clerical-script (reisho) calligraphy in its cartouches and was published by Maruseiya Jinpachi as one of several Tokaido editions Hiroshige produced to satisfy the persistent appetite of the Edo print market for Edo ukiyo-e landscape prints organized by station. The Art Institute of Chicago's impression preserves the cool, restrained palette characteristic of the Reisho Tokaido, including subtle bokashi shading in the sky. Where his Hoeido edition of the early 1830s tended toward more dramatic incident, the Reisho version of Seki emphasizes architecture and the orderly rhythm of street life, presenting the post station as a stable point of arrival within a long journey rather than a site of weather or theatrical event.
