Description
Shichirigahama in Sagami Province (Soshu Shichirigahama) belongs to Utagawa Hiroshige's series Famous Places of Japan (Honcho meisho), a project that surveys celebrated scenic locations across the country rather than confining itself to a single road or city. Created around 1832 and held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, this Edo ukiyo-e landscape print captures the long stretch of beach that arcs along the Sagami coast, an area famed for its association with the priest Nichiren and for its sweeping views toward Mount Fuji and the island of Enoshima. Hiroshige composes the scene as a horizontal panorama in which the shoreline curves gently from foreground to distance, drawing the viewer's eye along the wet sand toward distant headlands rendered in cool blue-grey washes. Travelers and fishermen appear as small dark silhouettes against the pale beach, a scale that emphasizes the immensity of sky and sea rather than the activities of individuals. The artist relies on graded bokashi printing in the water and clouds to suggest the soft maritime light particular to this coastline, while the band of pines that fringes the shore is keyed in a denser green to anchor the composition. As a landscape print, Shichirigahama exemplifies Hiroshige's early commitment to topographical accuracy combined with lyrical mood, distinguishing his approach from the more sensational tradition of figure-centered ukiyo-e. The Honcho meisho series helped establish meisho-e (pictures of famous places) as a major genre for Edo audiences who could not easily travel to such locations themselves, and this Sagami view contributes to that wider mapping of the Japanese landscape from the artist's Edo studio.
