Hiroshige's snow scenes are among the most atmospheric in Japanese printmaking, using bokashi gradation to create luminous, quiet winter landscapes. His snow, moon, and flower triptychs are especially prized.
Description
Muronotsu in Harima Province (modern Hyogo) — a small harbor town on the Harima Sea — is shown under fresh snowfall, its fishing boats and low rooftops blanketed in white. The contrast between the warm dark water of the harbor and the snowy shore above gives this view its atmospheric quality. Harima's coast, facing the sheltered Seto Inland Sea, was an important maritime corridor in western Japan.
