This [oban](/glossary/oban)-format [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) from the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (published 1856–1858 by Uoya Eikichi) depicts a sudden summer downpour breaking over Shin Ohashi bridge spanning the Sumida River. Rain is rendered as fine diagonal lines of black ink crossing the entire picture field—a technique achieved by carving thin parallel channels into a dedicated woodblock and overprinting across the composition. Figures on the bridge, including commoners and porters, hunch beneath the deluge. The broad planks of the bridge are foreshortened in a near-aerial perspective, the rail creating a strong diagonal axis that bisects the image. Below, the Sumida's surface is agitated by rain, printed in deep indigo with [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation. The overcast sky is rendered in a silvery grey wash. The composition divides into three atmospheric zones—sky, bridge, and turbulent water—each distinguished by a distinct tonal register. The image is among the most frequently reproduced designs in the Meisho Edo hyakkei series.
