Description
Sunrise on New Year's Day at the Musashiya Restaurant in Susaki (Susaki hatsu hinode, Musashiya) belongs to Utagawa Hiroshige's series Famous Restaurants of Edo (Edo komei kaitei zukushi), produced around 1833 and held by the Art Institute of Chicago. The series departs from the artist's usual meisho-e of landscapes and bridges to portray the celebrated dining establishments of the city, treating restaurants as famous places in their own right. Susaki, on the bay east of central Edo, was a popular destination for viewing the first sunrise of the lunar new year (hatsu hinode), and the Musashiya was one of the prominent restaurants whose terraces and upper rooms looked out over the water toward the horizon. In this Edo ukiyo-e print, Hiroshige stages the scene at daybreak, with the disc of the rising sun emerging over the bay and the building's verandas filled with patrons gathered for the auspicious occasion. The composition balances the architecture of the restaurant, the open expanse of bay rendered in pale bokashi, and the figures who animate the terraces, treating the human ritual of welcoming the new year as part of the broader urban landscape. Although less famous than Hiroshige's Tokaido and Edo meisho landscape print series, designs like this one extend his characteristic interest in seasonal rhythm and atmospheric light into the urban world of food, fashion, and social ritual, demonstrating how Edo culture treated dining at well-known venues as an integral part of the city's calendar.
