Description

The Moon Reflected on the Water by the Pier of a Bridge, an 1845 Edo ukiyo-e landscape print by Utagawa Hiroshige in the Victoria and Albert Museum, distills one of his favourite themes into a quietly contemplative composition. The image foregrounds the great pier of a bridge rising out of a still expanse of water, with the moon shining above and its reflection broken into rippling light on the surface below. Such night-time scenes were a recurrent subject for Hiroshige, who often returned to the Sumida and other Edo waterways at dusk or after dark. By isolating a single architectural element and the reflective river beneath it, he creates a composition that is at once intimate and monumental, inviting the viewer to dwell on the elemental relationship between built structure, water, and moonlight. The colour scheme is restrained, dominated by deep indigos and silvery whites, while bokashi gradations across the sky help to model the soft luminosity of the moon. As an example of his late mature work, this design demonstrates how Hiroshige's command of the woodblock could reduce a familiar urban subject to its most resonant essentials. Such prints anticipated the suggestive nocturnes of his great Hundred Views of Edo and, beyond Japan, influenced Western artists drawn to the poetic possibilities of night cityscapes. The V&A sheet preserves an evocative impression that allows modern viewers to enter Hiroshige's hushed evening world with unusual immediacy.
